One of the toughest issues a parent can deal with is a missing parent in their child's life. It becomes worse when there is a special needs child involved. The problem is not caused by you at all in some cases, but it is a case in which the other parent is having a hard time dealing with the issue of being a parent. I recently read a Dear Abby article in which a mother of a special needs child dealt with a missing parent issue. The child might not notice at first the missing parent, but it does become an issue as the child becomes older and asks questions. I have no advice on how to handle these questions. However, you can fill your child's life with positive role models of the opposite gender. When your child is 8 years old, you can register them for Big Brothers Big Sisters which matches up a child with an adult of the missing parent's gender for free.
