One of the most frustrating issues for a parent of a special needs child is to face is dealing with a classroom placement issue. With some disabilities such as Autism, there is a lot of different therapy appointments in a week with a preschool child. One parent recently faced a time conflict with preschool class time and existing therapy appointment times. The I.E.P. team suggested that she disagree with the Individual Education Plan. She was left wondering what to do since it ignored some of the problems her son was having at the time. I mentioned to her that the I.E.P. dealt with issues that impacted her son's learning in the classroom. I mentioned that she could request her son to have an independent evaluation. I also recommended to her to read WrightsLaw which is a great website about her rights in Special Education.
